Online social and personal networking thingies
like Facebook suck because they give immature
people permission to bother the world with their
narcissistic and attention-seeking behavior. Facebook
is like a bathroom wall that everyone writes on except
real bathroom walls are much more interesting.
Facebook gives needy people a place to go where
everyone knows their name. On the internet we guard
our time with less vigilance. We are so generous with it.
By giving our time away, social media abstract privacy.
And without privacy there is no intimacy. With no
intimacy, everyone gets knocked down to the same
level of friendship. Inside jokes become outside jokes.
Everyone knows “what’s on your mind”. Facebook
puts us all on the same social footing. The company
consolidates our loneliness by putting us in a crowded
room with people we barely know. On the internet we
are all the person we are not. And above all: it is at
war with privacy. It’s an open book for the companies
you hate so much.
